Description:

89. THADDEUS S.C. LOWE (1832-1913) American balloonist whose Union balloon corps tracked enemy movements, most notably at Fair Oaks where observations directed artillery and prevented a Union rout. Rare A.L.S. "T.S.C. Lowe" on Lowe Steamship Refrigerating Co. letterhead, New York, June 16, 1868 to his partner James Ames about the use of his refrigeration invention aboard steamships. In part: "...yours of the 12th is received mentioning...the safe arrival of the shad in Louisville...I think we can safely go ahead with the California matter...Things here will be brought to a close I think to our satisfaction this week in the Steam Ship matter...The rain today prevented Mr. Stanton from finishing his calls...I shall also get the dimensions you require..." Lowe also mentions financial difficulties and promises to repay a loan his partner had made to him. Lightly toned fold barely affects signature else near fine. Lowe is scarce, and rare in autograph letters.
