Description:

LOUIS ARMSTRONG''S TRUMPET MOUTHPIECE
No musician of the 20th Century was more beloved, more influential and more iconic than Louis Armstrong, known to generations simply as ''Satchmo''. Armstrong had a complicated relationship with the Civil Rights Movement, but didn''t hesitate to stand his ground in the face of social injustices. A 2014 New Yorker magazine profile described how Armstrong told President Eisenhower in 1957 that he had ''no guts'' after his refusal to let nine black children attend a Little Rock high school. To a reporter at the time, Armstrong said, ''It''s getting almost so bad that a colored man hasn''t got any country.'' Armstrong later boycotted the entire City of New Orleans for nine years after they banned integrated jazz bands. Even so, Armstrong remained a realist. ''We''ve been wined and dined by all kinds of royalty,'' the famed trumpeter said of globetrotting with his wife. ''But regardless of all that stuff I''ve got sense enough to know I''m still Louis Armstrong – colored.'' A brass mouthpiece formerly belonging to Armstrong, as presented to the late NYC broadcasting legend Joe Franklin who pioneered the collecting of entertainment memorabilia by soliciting mementos from the tens of thousands of guests who appeared on his talk shows over the course of a 70-year career. Armstrong''s mouthpiece is beautifully shadowboxed, and accompanied by Joe Franklin''s letter of provenance and press.
