Description:

"LORD HAW-HAW" WILLIAM JOYCE
WILLIAM JOYCE (1906 - 1946) "Lord Haw-Haw". American-born, Anglo-Irish Fascist politician and Nazi propaganda broadcaster to the United Kingdom during World War II. He took German citizenship in 1940. He was convicted of one count of high treason in 1945 and was sentenced to death by hanging. Very rare signed book, his "Twilight Over England", (Berlin: International Verlag), 1940. First edition in light brown cloth with red titles, 168pp. 8vo. Inscribed in pencil on the front flyleaf from his exile in Germany: "To E.L. in memory of the Caterpillar Will". Accompanied by a related letter to an owner of the book by British foreign journalist and novelist REBECCA WEST (1892 - 1983) on both sides of her 12mo. correspondence card, Ibstone, [n.d.]. In part: "...The International Verlag printed books for distribution among prisoners of war and in neutral and Commonwealth countries...What surprises me is that they published a book by William Joyce ["Twilight Over England"] so early in the war for the Germans thought little of him at first. It''s enormously lacking in punch...I think the Caterpillar was the name of a cafe frequented by the traitor[?] broadcasters...E.L. I will try to identify. I can''t remember who Lady Anne Brigham was..." Two pieces, very good.
