756. JAMES LONGSTREET (1821-1904) Confederate major general who commanded Lee's right wing at Antietam, and the left flank at Chickamauga. Longstreet has been accused of delaying his attack at Gettysburg, leading to the Confederate defeat there. Nice content A.L.S. "James Longstreet" 2pp. 8vo., Gainesville, Apr. 19, 1888, to Thomas M. Musgrove, in part: "...Your kind letter of the 15th instant asking that I be your guest in case of my visit to New York for the banquet...in honor of General [Ulysses S.] Grant's birthday is received...I must add however, that it does not seem possible...". Folds detached and lightly tacked with archival tape at verso, should be restored. Else boldly written. $400-600
