LION'S HEAD DAMASCUS PRESENTATION SWORD BY ALCOSO
An excessively rare full Damascus steel presentation Dove's Head Sword by Alcoso, Solingen. The pipe-backed 35 in. blade with yelman is made of the finest quality Damascus steel, probably by Carl Wester. It is inscribed on one side with the raised (or inset) presentation in gold letters: 'Das Offizierkorps der schw. Artl. Abt. 602.', with the other side of the blade bearing two lines of similar lettering reading: 'Unserem verehrten scheidenden Kommandeur im Gedenken an die Feldzuge in Polen, Holland, Belgien, Frankreich 1939 - 40.' ('To our honored outgoing Commander in memory of the Campaigns in Poland, Holland, Belgium, France 1939 - 40). Alcoso maker's mark in gold. Brass knuckle-bow hilt with lion's head pommel set with red glass eyes. Black synthetic grip with braided copper and brass wire winding which remains taut. Silver ferrule originally gold-washed, the wash worn from use. Black lacquered steel scabbard remains straight with no significant dents, the paint very slightly touched-up. Extremely rare. SOLD WITH: an artillery officer's parade belt, 39 in. long, with a catch but lacking buckle and its attachment strap, the lining and wire embroidery worn. This artillery battalion was formed in August 1939. It had one battery with 10.5 cm howitzers and two batteries with 15
cm howitzers. It later participated in the Eastern Campaign and was destroyed in early 1943 in the south of Russia.
