Description:

Expansive grouping of nearly 100 letters sent by Korean War soldier, Private First Class Lawrence D. Brown, Weapons Company, Third Battalion, Fifth Marine Regiment, mostly addressed to his mother from mid-1951 into mid-1952. Largely unread, though not for lack of content. Within just a few select letters, notable passages include: '...We've been having a lot of enemy mortar fire landing around here, too many, they're coming pretty close...enemy machine guns about 400 yards from here, every once in a while they open up and spray the whole hill...it's pretty hard to sleep at night, the artillery makes so much noise...firing over our heads most of the time...they've got bunkers and barbed wire all over the place...we fired this afternoon with the mortars, I think we got a few china boys...I hear the Marines made a landing on the East Coast....[they have] taken the punch bowl near here and the first ridge on the other side...called bloody ridge...I hear there is going to be an invasion near Wanson...' Much more great content. Each letter accompanied with original transmittal envelope. Sold with at least 50 original photographs, including many portraits of Brown and some images of exploding mortar shells, as well as various pieces of assorted ephemera. Certainly worthy of further research.
