JOHN A. LEJEUNE (1867-1942) "The Greatest of all Leathernecks" 13th United States Marine Corps Commandant, commanded a division during the First World War. A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo, "Headquarters 2nd Division", Heddesdorf, Germany, Jan. 10, 1919, to his wife while on occupation duty following the end of the First World War, in part: "...This is my birthday I am 52 years old today. I celebrated it by going to Colbenz with Captain Nelson this morning & having my photo taken for you...Took lunch at the officers mess in the Kaiser Hof Hotel, a great building on the bank of the Rhine which has been taken over by the 3rd Army Hqrs. There I met Col Rhea in former Chief of Staff...This evening, the Aides had a surprise party for me....a stringed orchestra played during h the evening & several officers were invited to dinner...we sat up in the library after dinner & smoked, talked & listed to the music. Altogether it was quite a party...". Usual folds, otherwise very good. $200-300
