A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo, "Headquarters 2nd Division", Heddesdorf, Germany, Jan. 10, 1919, to his wife while on occupation duty following the end of the First World War, in part: "...This is my birthday I am 52 years old today. I celebrated it by going to Colbenz with Captain Nelson this morning & having my photo taken for you...Took lunch at the officers mess in the Kaiser Hof Hotel, a great building on the bank of the Rhine which has been taken over by the 3rd Army Hqrs. There I met Col Rhea in former Chief of Staff...This evening, the Aides had a surprise party for me....a stringed orchestra played during h the evening & several officers were invited to dinner...we sat up in the library after dinner & smoked, talked & listed to the music.
