86. DANVILLE LEADBETTER (1811-1866) Confederate brigadier general who constructed the defenses at Mobile and Chattanooga. After the war he fled to Mexico and then Canada, where he died. Scarce war-date partly printed D.S. "D. Leadbetter Brig. Genl", 1p. 8vo., Atlanta, July, 1862 approving four months of backpay for Private A.P. Lyle. According to Lyle's request, he had been serving "as private in Co. E 50th Regmt. Tenn Vol. said Regmt was captured at Fort Donelson but I made my escape and joined Co A 1st Ky Cavalry and that pay is due me..." Lyle requests an additional amount of $25.00 for clothing, for a total of $69.00. Leadbetter's signature appears beneath Lyle's written request. Signature lightly feathered, else very good. $400-600
