Lot 1105
1105. ALBERT KESSELRING (1885 - 1960) Field Marshal in the Luftwaffe and at Nuremberg was tried for war crimes. Death sentence commuted due to ill health. Fine content A.L.S. "Kesselring", 2pp. 4to., Werl, Sept. 21, 1950, in German written from his prison cell to a former SS company commander, one Mr. Schneider, in part: "...Your affidavit will be added to the papers and filed with my lawyer and if need be become effective. You better keep the manuscript yourself; it is an episode of life, which could prove to be yourself; it is an episode of life, which could prove to be of greatest interest to you and your family. Please forward to Buildings Commissioner Schmalbruch my most cordial regards; hopefully he has found an occupation which satisfies him economically and idealistically...with your wanting to go abroad ...to find work in your former line...[it] seems impossible to me, for especially building activities are flourishing all over. Of course one can agree with the decision of immigration; but whether or not I would choose Yugoslavia I don't know, for I received knowledge of too many atrocities etc. committed against German soldiers and ethnic Germans etc...in order to avoid my name, you may use, in case you are sending a letter from abroad, the name: Keyhsler, Bad Wiesse am Tegernsee, Haus Schau In's Land, to address me and the envelope; my 93 year old mother-in-law hides behind this name... today my wish is for your doing well on your way up and for reunification of our needy devastated, separated fatherland and that it may be spared from war...the Western world knows even today still - Only incomplete - the Necessities for pacification in the world...". Ex Walter Benjamin. Light creases, otherwise fine condition. $400 - 500
