Description:

JUDAH P. BENJAMIN
(1811-1884) Confederate Secretary of War and Secretary of State who became very unpopular for his convictions that Southern slaves should be armed to fight for the Confederacy, which of course eventually came to be. The only Jew in the Confederate Cabinet, he fled to England at war's end to avoid prosecution. Brief A.L.S. Ip. 12mo., Washington, Apr. 3, 1860 to Alonzo D. Faulkner. In part: "...I state that the address of Richard Taylor, son of the Late President, is 'St. Charles, Louisiana...'. RICHARD TAYLOR (1826–1879) was an American planter, politician, military historian, and Confederate general. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Taylor joined the Confederate Army, serving first as a brigade commander in Virginia, and later as an army commander in the Trans-Mississippi Theater. Taylor commanded the District of West Louisiana and was responsible for successfully opposing Union troops invading upper northwest Louisiana during the Red River Campaign of 1864. He was the only son of Zachary Taylor. Signature was at one time clipped off, now reattached from verso, some glue staining with owners identifying label beneath signature, generally good.
