JOSHUA L. CHAMBERLAIN
(1828-1914) Union brigadier general of the 20th Maine whose valiant defense of Little Round Top prevented the Confederates from turning the line at Gettysburg. Chamberlain was also present at Lee's surrender at Appomattox. A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Portland, Sept. 11, 1905, to Mrs. Carroll Parnell, in part: "...Not only have I to thank you for your bright and cheering presence on the Evening. I was telling the story of Gettysburg to our good people at the Grange Hall, but also for the sweet remembrance for the lovely birthday bouquet....There is a fragrance of this bouquet which will not perish with its material substance...". Very good condition, with original envelope.
