Description:

JOSEPH WHEELER
(1836 - 1906) Confederate major general, ‘Fighting Joe' was a brilliant cavalry officer who raided Rosecrans at Chattanooga and harassed Sherman's army through Georgia and the Carolinas. Nice association war-date L.S., 1p.4to., McMinnville, Oregon, March 10, 1863, to Gen. BRAXTON BRAGG (1817-1876). In part: ‘...your letter regarding the bad conduct of the Cavalry in the immediate front of the Army was received this evening. I am constrained to think that these stampedes result from neglect on the part of officer in immediate command, and carelessness in posting and instructing the pickets...I sent three officers to inspect the entire front and see that the pickets and videttes were properly posted...When I arrived at this place I directed Gen'l Wharton to relieve the Regiments from Gen'l Morgan's Brigade, near Bradyville and Woodbury...the enemy advanced and they all remained in position to resist him. On the enemy's retiring the Regiments of Gen'l Morgan's Brigade went on towards Liberty...I am now requiring the strictest accountability to be given of all arms and ammunition issued...' Signed ‘Jos Wheeler' at the conclusion as major general. Lightly soiled but still very legible. Very good. Mounted to a type of inventory list. Accompanied by a typed version of this letter.
