Description:

JOSEPH SMITH
(1805 - 1844) American religious leader, founder of the Mormon Church, envisioned The Book of Mormon. Jailed by non-Mormons, he was taken from his cell in Carthage, Il. and shot by the mob. Very desirable 'The Kirtland Safety Society' ten dollar note, serial no. 741, Feb. 10, 1837, issued at Kirtland, Ohio and boldly signed by Smith as Cashier of the bank. Also signed by SIDNEY RIGDON (1793-1876) as President. Rigdon was First Counselor to Joseph Smith from 1833 until Smith's death. He was also one of the most influential figures in the development of early Mormonism. In terms of doctrine, priesthood organization, the Word of Wisdom, Missouri persecutions, and so many other factors, Rigdon's importance to the new faith can hardly be exaggerated. Additionally signed by A. B. HALL". In very fine uncirculated condition. The Kirtland Safety Society was first proposed as a bank in 1836, and eventually organized on Jan. 2, 1837, as a joint stock company, by leaders and followers of the Church of the Latter Day Saints. It was intended to serve the financial needs of the growing Mormon community in Kirtland, Ohio, but soon became insolvent.
