Description: JOSE DE SAN MARTIN
(1778-1850) "The Protector of Peru", Argentinean soldier and statesman who proclaimed the independence of Peru in 1821. Scarce manuscript L.S. 1p. legal folio, Lima, Jan. 7, 1819. San Martin writes from his Headquarters to the Secretary of State of the Republic of Columbia[?], asking that allocations be made in the budget for a Chilean battalion, and be brought to the attention of and approved by "...The Most Excellent Supreme Head of State", i.e. Simon Bolivar. San Martin's victories over the Spanish Army in 1818 liberated Chile and made preparations for the invasion of Peru. Chile's independence formalized in April 1819, three months after this letter, with Peru's independence following shortly thereafter. Negligent foxing in a few spots, otherwise very good condition.
