84. JOSEPH E. JOHNSTON (1807-1891) Confederate major general who led armies at Bull Run and Seven Pines. Johnston is perhaps best remembered for his stubborn defense of Atlanta and his resistance to Sherman's March to the Sea. Nice content A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Washington, Apr. 15, 1887, in part: "Gen'l A[lbert] S[idney] Johnston's widow resides in Los Angeles...I don't know if any of her children reside with her. Col. Wm. Preston Johnston, his son by the first marriage, is at the State College at Baton Rouge..." Very good. $300-400
