Description:

82. ADAM R. JOHNSON (1834-1922) "Stovepipe", Confederate brigadier general who rode with Morgan and was nicknamed for his deceptive use of stove pipe joints to simulate a cannon, a ruse he used to capture Newburgh, Indiana. In 1864 he was accidentally shot and blinded by his own men. Scarce partly-printed A.D.S. signed three times "AR Johnson" with rank and adding "Morgan's Div" at bottom, 1p. oblong 8vo., Atlanta, Ga., Feb. 11, 1864, a requisition for stationery including "5 Quires Letter Paper 5 qrs. Foolscap Paper 6 Pen Holders..." The small quantities suggest that these were for his own use. Some toning, otherwise in good condition.
