JOHN W. FORNEY
(1829 - 1902) Confederate major general who led Kirby Smith's brigade after the latter was wounded, later serving in the defenses of Mobile and Vicksburg. Unusual A.Ms.S. 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Feb. 28, 1849, a poem titled "The Ambitions and the Obscure" which reads, "'Who with such ... as the exploding mind, Brings from the cares of knowledge, Buy their random from those times failures Of the daring Heart, Lot Birth & Iron Fortune'" Below, Forney explains that the verse is "An axiom, from the inspired poem[?] of Bulwer that every American citizen should write on the ticket of enduring Remembrance" Fine condition.
