JOHN T. CROXTON
(1836-1874) Union general wounded in action at Chickamauga, later led Croxton's Raid, a cavalry operation and one of the last of the Civil War. Croxton led his men across Alabama from March, 1854 – April, 1865, skirmishing with Confederate forces along the way and burning the majority of buildings of the University of Alabama, used as a military school at the time. A.E.S., ‘Camp Near Tuscumbia', July 1, 1862, on the verso of a manuscript document, 1p. 4to., a copy of ‘Special Order No 36' issued by Maj. Gen. George McClellan on Feb. 18, 1862, discharging three soldiers of the 4th Kentucky Volunteers from service. Croxton's endorsement reads, in full: ‘The order of which the enclosed is a true copy was delivered to Lt. M. C. Miller [one of the soldiers discharged] on the 10th of March, 1862, & he continued on duty until that time'. He signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank ‘Col. 4th Ky Vols'. The two leaves of the document are separated, and shows some folds overall, otherwise in very good condition.
