JOHN SULLIVAN PROCLAIMS A DAY OF FASTING
Scarce Broadside, 1p. folio, Portsmouth, Feb. 23, 1790 (Exeter: Printed by J. Lamson), entitled "State of New-Hampshire...A PROCLAMATION for a GENERAL FAST." Advising that "As it is the indispensable duty of Individuals and nations to humble themselves before ALMIGHTY GOD our HEAVENLY FATHER, to consider their ways with humble, lowly, penitent and obedient hearts...As prayers and supplications are the means to express our general charity to all mankind...The General court have thought fit to give an apportuniety [sic] to perform these great duties...by appointing THURSDAY the Fifteenth Day of April next, to be observed as a Day of GENERAL FASTING and PRAYER...All Servile Labour and recreation are forbidden on said day...". Docketed on verso, "Recd. W. Connant Lyme". Not in Evans, but cataloged in Early American Imprints, Series 1 (Shipton & Mooney), 45921; Bristol B7428; Whittemore, C. New Hampshire, 520. Usual folds with partial separation and one pinhole at fold intersection, light soiling, else fine.
