Description:

JOHN SEDGWICK
(1813 - 1864) Union major general wounded at Antietam and Glendale, fought at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, killed by a sharpshooter at Spotsylvania while claiming the Confederates wouldn't be able to hit an elephant at such a distance. Good association war-date A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], March 27, 1864, on ‘Headquarters Sixth Army Corps' letterhead to a Mrs. S. L. Dana of Philadelphia, wife of Gen. Edmund L. Dana. In part: ‘It gives me much pleasure to comply with your request, by sending a photograph – my services with the General, your husband, seem to me, of the preeminent kind. He was wounded on the… field, and lay for some hours in the … tavern. When you come to him, I will thank you to give my kind regards.' He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds with minor splits thereto, with mounting remnants and a pencil identifying inscription to the verso, else very good. Sold with a period engraving of Sedgwick, with his facsimile signature beneath the image. EDMUND L. DANA (1817-1889) served as Colonel and commander of the 143rd Pa. Vols. During the fighting around the McPherson Farm on the first day at Gettysburg, he commanded the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, I Corps when the previous commanders were wounded and put out of action. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on July 26, 1865 for 'meritorious services'.
