Description:

American general "Black Jack" Pershing commanded troops sent to capture Pancho Villa, and later was Commander in Chief of all American forces in Europe in World War I. Good content T.L.S. "John J. Pershing" on black-bordered mourning stationery, 1p. 8vo., Fort Bliss, Oct. 20, 1915, to Judge and Mrs. Charles Potter on the unexpected death of his wife. In part: "...I have tried several times to write you, it has just seemed impossible for me to do so, and I knew you would understand...Your message has been of much comfort to me under the crushing sorrow that has come so unexpectedly into my life...". Boldly signed and very good.
