JOHN HANCOCK
(1737 - 1793) American Revolutionary politician and first signer of the Declaration of Independence, President of the Continantal Congress and two-time Governor of Massachusetts. Partly-printed A.D. (unsigned), 1p. oblong 8vo., Boston, Sept. 30, 1762, an important certificate prepared for the signature of Josiah Stover, master of the ship Flower anchored at Boston Harbor, "...and by Gods Grace bound for Annapolis Royall to say, One Bag containing Five Hundred Dollars...". With black wax seal at top left, boldly written and in very good condition, mounted. At this time, young John Hancock was employed as a clerk in the office of his uncle and surrogate father, Boston merchant Thomas Hancock. This rare document shows the importance of hard silver coinage payment being transferred and made to fund the British American War efforts of the period.
