JOHN H. FORNEY
(1829 - 1902) Confederate major general who led Kirby Smith's brigade after the latter was wounded, later serving in the defenses of Mobile and Vicksburg. War-date D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., ‘Head Quarters Pensacola District', July 14, 1861, ‘Orders No. 18'. In part: ‘...Maj.: Marks will relieve 1st Lieut. J.T. Holtzclaw from duty with his command and direct him to report to these Head Quarters for special duty as Instructor of artillery...' Signed by Forney at the conclusion, adding his rank. Light spotting to the left third of the page, else very good. SOLD WITH a war-date manuscript D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., place and date are illegible, requesting a Col. Fain be seen by the Examining Board for a promotion. The signer is unknown.
