(1800 - 1865) Confederate brigadier general and commander of the Confederate Libby Prison, Belle Isle and the notorious prison at Andersonville. He escaped the hangman, dying just before war's end. Great content A.L.S. as Brigadier General, 1p. 4to., 'Headquarters of the Department of Henrico', Richmond, VA, December 26, 1872, written to Brigadier General HENRY A. WISE (1806 - 1876) about a Confederate deserter under his command. In part: '...Frank Myers with Capt. Rogers Cavalry, of your command...is claimed by Maj. J. W. Atkinson, Com[man]d[in]g 19th Bat. Heavy Artillery, as a deserter...Said Myers was confined in the Eastern Station in this City for some time & no one coming to claim him. The Provost Marshal delivered him to Capt. Rogers with the understanding that he should be returned when claimed. Will you please have him delivered to the bearer & oblige'. Signed at the conclusion. Small brown stain at upper-left, else fine. Before his Confederate service, Henry Wise was the Governor of Virginia who sent John Brown to the gallows. He died never accepting amnesty.
