Description:

JOHN GIBBON
(1827 - 1896) Union major general who fought throughout the war at the head of the Iron brigade, severely wounded at Gettysburg, and after the war led the relief column to bury the dead at the Little Big Horn. A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., ‘Vancouver Barracks, W[estern] T[erritory], Nov. 17, 1889, on letterhead of the Headquarters Department of the Columbia to Brevetted Brigadier General Charles H. Tompkins. Six days after Washington is named a state, Gibbon writes: ‘…In the selection of a new Quartermaster Genl. next June, I desire to say that I regard your claim to the position as superior to those of all others...You are not only senior in the Corps, & greatly qualified…but you have additional claims based on…service in the Civil War…'. Boldly written, mounting traces to central fold not affecting text, very good. Tompkins (1830-1915) was a Medal of Honor recipient: as a cavalryman at Fairfax, he twice charged through the lines and, taking a carbine from an enlisted man, shot the enemy's captain.
