(1780 - 1841) American politician from Virginia; served several terms as member of the U.S. House of Representatives; Senator, Secretary of State. L.S., as Secretary of State, 1p. 4to., Dec. 18, 1837 to Charles Turner in New York. Interesting content, in part: "…I have to inform you that if you will frame or caused to be framed a memorial to this Department under oath, setting forth the particulars of your complaint again the Mexican government, and will transmit the same with such original documentary proof as you may have…the case will be taken into consideration….". WITH another L.S. as Secretary of State, 1p. 4to., May 14, 1839, to Gilbert Davis in New York. In part: "…I enclose you a carriers passport, together with a passport for Mr. Delavan & a packet for our Minister at Vienna, but as the Despatches are not of sufficient importance to allow of any expense to the Department…you can leave it with Mr. Bedient, the Agent…at New York….". WITH a partly-printed D.S. as Secretary of State, 2pp. 4to., Sep. 15, 1838, in part: "…I certify that John D. Clark, whose name is subscribed to the paper hereunto annexed…binding the same…a Justice of the Peace for the County of Washington, in the District of Columbia…". Three pieces.
