Description:

(1917 - 1963) Thirty-fifth President of the United States. Kennedy faced-down the Kruschev during the Cuban Missile Crisis, re-invigorated NASA, and signed the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Assassinated November 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald. Great association T.L.S. 'Jack' on United States Senate letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington D.C., Aug. 15, 1957, to a Kennedy family attorney 'Thomas Walsh' about the death of his father-in-law, JOHN 'BLACK JACK' BOUVIER III. In part: 'As you know, Jackie's father died recently. He evidently left some sort of an estate, including some securities. I received the enclosed letter (not present) from Attorney Bernard A. Saslow. I was wondering if you could look it over and let me know what I should advise Jackie to do.' File and staple holes, light paper clip indent, else very fine. Once a prominent American Wall Street stockbroker and socialite, Bouvier's drinking, gambling, and philandering led to his divorce from Jacqueline's mother. Upon her engagement to John F. Kennedy, her stepfather walked her down the aisle for their wedding; some reports indicated Bouvier was too intoxicated to escort his daughter. By the mid-1950s, Bouvier had sporadic contact with his family, instead spending the majority of his time drinking alone at his New York City apartment. Bouvier was unsurprisingly diagnosed with terminal liver cancer in the spring of 1957, succumbing to the disease on August 3rd, 1957 - twelve days before this letter was written.
