(1784 - 1869) Union major general who fought off the Confederates at Fort Monroe and occupied Norfolk. A.L.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., New York, Nov. 19, 1853, while commanding the Eastern Military Division, to Lieut. James A. Hardie, in part: "…I have this day appointed your Aide-de-Camp to date from the 1st December 1853 in the place of 1st Lieutenant Grier Tallmadge 4th Artillery resigned…". James Allen Hardie (1823-1876) served on McClellan's staff during the Peninsular and Maryland campaigns, and under Burnside in the battles around Fredericksburg. Expertly inlaid, fine.
