Description:

JOHN COLTRANE
(1926 - 1967) Innovative American jazz saxophone player, his first recording was with Dizzy Gillespie, with later extensive work with Johnny Hodges, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk before forming his own ensembles to play his distinctive brand of jazz. A fine and very rare piece, an original pen and ink drawing of a woman's head with several figures below, accomplished on a legal folio size sheet of musical letterhead ca. 1955-1959. Beneath the well-executed side-profile portrait of a woman is a more casual sketch of a man playing a sax, as well as a side-profile figure of a second man Additionally there are the letters "B B B B and a stylized "H" [?]. A large ink smear travels from the upper right corner to middle, touching the sketch, and is evident on verso as well. Not signed, light wear to left margin and a few negligible creases, very good condition. Purchased directly from the Coltrane family's sale at their auction at Lincoln Center in 2005, with corresponding date stamp on verso and copy of the original auction catalog page.
