Description:

JOHN COLTRANE
(1926 - 1967) Innovative American jazz saxophone player, his first recording was with Dizzy Gillespie, with later extensive work with Johnny Hodges, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk before forming his own ensembles to play his distinctive brand of jazz. An extraordinary and very rare Coltrane offering, an original musical manuscript for one of his most famous compositions, "Body and Soul", 2pp. legal folio, [n.p., n.d. but ca, 1955-1959], accomplished in pencil entirely in Coltrane's hand (unsigned). The page bears the title "Body + Soul" at top, with "IIIrd Alto" added at top left, with both the title and alto parts of this jazz classic boldly written on two sides of the same sheet. "Body and Soul" was written during Coltrane's most prolific period during which he was performing and recording with legends such as Thelonius Monk and Miles Davis as well as forming his own group. Judging by the complexity seen in this arrangement, it appears that it was designed for recording; however the quote is not from the well-known version of "Body and Soul" which Coltrane did record on Oct. 24, 1960. Purchased directly from the Coltrane family's sale at their auction at Lincoln Center in 2005, with a copy of the auction listing. Coltrane's family speculated that this manuscript may belong to an earlier arrangement composed for a small group. In very good to near fine condition, with just a few negligible stains, none of which affect text.
