Description:

JOHN COLTRANE
(1926 - 1967) Innovative American jazz saxophone player, his first recording was with Dizzy Gillespie, with later extensive work with Johnny Hodges, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk before forming his own ensembles to play his distinctive brand of jazz. A superb piece, an original handwritten musical score for an untitled 5th baritone saxophone solo, 1p. legal folio, [n.p., n.d. but ca. 1955-1959]. Penned in black ink on musical letterhead, the four-bar unsigned quote is titled "Vth Baritone" at top left, and is boldly written in black fountain ink. Penned below, Coltrane practices writing treble and bass clefs, with an eight-bar chord progression penciled beneath that. In addition, he has drawn a pencil sketch of a man playing the piano with a woman leaning over his shoulder. Interestingly, this is drawn upside down! On verso of this extraordinary page is the holograph pencil notation "the son of Al-Pha'us spasmodic, convulsive, affect by spasm, violent convulsion". Al-Pha'us is possibly a biblical reference to the son of the apostle James. Wear to right margin, a couple of minimal marginal tears, overall very good condition and a wonderful insight into Coltrane's creative genius. Purchased directly by our consignor from the Coltrane family's sale at their auction at Lincoln Center in 2005, with a copy of the original auction catalogue page listing the piece.
