Description:

(1832-1910) Union brevet brigadier general who commanded the 96th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, severely wounded at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. War-date A.L.S. twice signed, 4pp. 4to., Nickajack Cove, Georgia, Dec. 9, 1863. In part: ‘...wrote to you from Chattanooga...told you I was there to try and get a leave of absence for Col. Champion on a surgeon's certificate of disability. I succeeded...started back for the Regiment...I expect however to go up to Chattanooga in a couple of days on some business and if the weather is clear I shall stay one day and go to the mountain as I may not get another chance...I also send a three inch shell fired by the rebels from Missionary Ridge at our forces during the Battle of Chattanooga. It did not explode and I picked the powder out...it will be a great curiosity in Galena...Gus it is strange that I receive no letter from you...you know Dear Gus what it is to be without a letter so long...doomed to disappointment...I have an idea that we shall remain here all winter...the most certain thing in the army is uncertainty...I shall go to Bridgeport tomorrow to get mustered...' Signed ‘Ever John'. Smith adds a postscript on the fourth page, in full: ‘P.S. I also send a complete list of the killed, wounded, and captured from our Brig. In the battle of Chickamauga on the 20th of Sep. 1863, it will be valuable for reference hereafter. It will show the names of the brave boys of the 90th who fell in that desperate battle.' Minor burn hole on first page, not intruding on text, else very good.
