Description:

JOHN C. FREMONT
(1813 - 1890) 'The Pathfinder', explorer of the western frontier and Union army major general until sacked by Lincoln for his efforts to garner more power. Fine content war-date A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., New York, Mar. 5, 1864 to 'K. Heingen[?] in Roxbury. In part: '...our friends in the West have anticipated your views as to the expediency of a Radical convention although they have called for a different place...You will have already heard from our friends why it was that they could not do better at Louisville...If I receive any details...I will communicate them...I would be glad to know what you think of the place & time which have been fixed for the convention...I am glad to know that you will act with them...[and] that you will insist upon an uncompromising course against the administration...' A few old marginal tape stains barely detract, else near fine. In early pre-election maneuvering, the Republican Party experienced a brief split during the candidate nominations. 'Radical Republicans'—a name they chose for themselves—briefly formed the Radical Democracy Party and nominated John C. Fremont as their presidential candidate. Fremont withdrew his nomination and endorsed incumbent Republican president, Abraham Lincoln.
