Description:

JOHN C. C. SANDERS
(1840 – 1864) One of the Confederate States' youngest brigadier generals. Sanders led the 11th Alabama at Seven Pines and during the following Seven Days Battles. After fighting in the Battle of Gaines Mill, Sanders was severely wounded in the leg by a shell fragment at the Battle of Glendale (Frayser's Farm). He was wounded again at the Battle of Second Bull Run and yet again at Antietam. He fought at Fredericksburg, Salem Church, and Gettysburg, where he was wounded in the knee on July 2, 1863. For his actions at Spotsylvania Court House, Sanders was promoted to brigadier general on May 31, 1864. He later fought at the Crater, Petersburg, and at Globe Tavern where the brave young man was mortally wounded. Excessively rare good content war-date A.L.S., 4pp. 4to., 'Bull Run near Manassas', July 28, 1861 in pencil to his sister 'Fannie'. Sanders describes the Union debacle at First Manassas a week earlier, in which the 11th Alabama was in reserve. In small part: '...I have been over the battlefield several times...upon which Southern blood and Southern chivalry gained a victory over one of the best equipped armies America has ever seen...The enemy advanced in two columns, but both were met and repulsed, more pieces of artillery were taken from them than our army had on the field...the ground over which they fought extends for miles...uneven and uncultivated, most of the residents having abandoned their homes...Every country house is either filled now or has been filled with the wounded of both sides...[one] having about 190 wounded of the enemy in it. Our regiment reached this place last Monday...tenting in the woods, under brush shelters...creeks are generally muddy, not so clear as in our country, not so many springs...The people are a lazy, indolent lookingset, or at least a good portionn either very intellectual nor enterprising...I had the pleasure of seeing Gen. Beauregard...He stopped and was conversing with some of his staff...He is a small man about 130 or 140 pounds...looks something a 'French dandy'...I do not think an attack will be made on Washington...all our troops will be advanced toward to Potomac...' The letter was apparently exposed to moisture when folded, affecting several 2.75 x 5 in. panels, most significantly the last page which nevertheless remains largely legible with a bit of concentration - the other effects are minor and Sanders' very rare signature is unaffected.
