Description:

JOHN BROWN
Rare A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Boston, June 3, 1839, to Messrs. O. O. Brown in Ohio, in part: '...I some expect to send an agent from this place to examine my lands in Franklin, Hudson & Irvinsburg being in all (including the one hundred acres in Irwinsburgh[sic] bought of Oliver) about five hundred acres. I want Oliver to have properly executed Deeds, of the Irwinsburgh land, executed & recorded without delay. If Milo L. Hudson's heirs...have or will cause the deed in Mr. Frederick Baldwin's hands to be put in my possession upon my paying the amount the arbiters award called for...I want to have that money made out some way for me to till I return...". At the time of this letter Brown, already in considerable debt from his ill-fated land speculations, suffered along with the rest of the nation in the wake of the Panic of 1837. The years 1839-1840 were particularly deleterious to the economic climate of the Western states like Ohio, who experienced heavy losses in specie, loans and so forth. Brown continued to attempt many different business ventures for relief of his debt despite almost consistent failures, but finally filed for bankruptcy in 1842. Very good.
