Description:

JOHN BASILONE
JOHN BASILONE (1916-1945) U.S. Marine Gunnery Sergeant and recipient of the Medal of Honor and Navy Cross. Excessively rare signed color photo, likely war-date, 3 1/4" x 5 1/2", shows the war hero in a full-standing view in uniform, inscribed to his first cousin and wife on verso: "To Eugene & Rose with Luck Sgt. John Basilone USM Corps". Color a bit washed-out, a tack-hole at top and two emulsion flaws, still very good. At Henderson Field on Guadalcanal, his unit was attacked by 3,000 Japanese using machine guns, grenades, and mortars against the American heavy machine guns. Basilone's machine guns fought for two days until only Basilone and two other Marines were left standing. Following a war bond tour of the U.S. and his marriage, Basilone returned to combat. At Iwo Jima he again exhibited incredible bravery but was killed by mortar fire, posthumously receiving the Navy Cross.
