Description:

JOHN A. LEJEUNE
(1867-1942) "The Greatest of all Leathernecks" 13th United States Marine Corps Commandant, commanded a division during the First World War. Fine content, important A.L.S. "John", 4pp. 8vo., aboard the USS Cincinnati, Bridgetown, Barbados, Mar. 16, 1898, to his mother. As a young sailor, Lejeune writes in part: "...We are off again, and we are having another day of excitement and rush...This morning just before noon, a cablegram arrived, and soon afterward came out of the Cabin that all three ships would go to sea at ten o'clock tonight. Our destination has been kept a professed secret, but I asked...the Capt's aid as the Caterer any thing that would help me out as to the quantity of stores to buy. He whispered the word Jamaica...". Lejeune continues with social content, then adds: "...We mustn't be concerned by all this war talk. I am sure that there is very little chance of war. And even if the impossible should happen, the war would be short and easy for us...". Ironically, this letter was written just one month before the United States declared war on Spain! Very good condition.
