Description:

JEFFERSON DAVIS
Interesting family content A.L.S. "Jefferson Davis", 2pp. 8vo., Memphis, Dec. 2, 1872 to a Mr. Bowman. In part: "...I know little of the case he presents and that little predisposes me against the justice of the claim. At the date given 1823 my Brother because of ill health and the purpose to engage in planting was winding up his business as a Lawyer, and soon thereafter, I do not know the date, the partnership of Reed & Davis was dissolved...I was then a schoolboy. You will understand my knowledge of such affairs was quite imperfect. The books of Reed & Grayson...would perhaps show the true character of the case...If the claim is a just one I have no hesitation as to paying it, but that must be shown before I can believe it to be so...". Expertly inlaid, a secretarial note at bottom, overall very good.
