Description:

JEAN-BAPTISTE ISABEY
JEAN-BAPTISTE ISABEY (1767-1855) French artist, a miniature painter to Marie Antoinette, he became a pupil of Jacques-Louis David. Patronized by Josephine and Napoleon Bonaparte, he arranged the ceremonies of their coronation and his work "Napoleon at Malmaison" is considered to be the best ever executed. Original circular miniature oil portrait by Isabey and so signed, possibly on ivory, 2 1/2" diameter (sight, unopened), set in a period wood frame. The image is that of French nobleman and statesman Mathieu de Montmorency. While the convex glass covering the painting bears some type of crystalline deposits within, which could undoubtedly be cleaned very easily, we have examined the painted image under magnification and will warrant that it does not bear any such damage itself and is in otherwise very good to fine condition. Matthieu de Morency (1767-1826) was a prominent French statesman during the French Revolution and Bourbon Restoration. He served with his father in the American Revolution, and at the outbreak of the Revolution, joined the Third Estate. At the beginning of the Bourbon Restoration, he was promoted to the rank of maréchal de camp, and accompanied Louis XVIII to Ghent during the Hundred Days. After the Battle of Waterloo and the final defeat of Napoleon in 1815, he was made a peer of France and later was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs.
