Description:

JAPANESE WAR CRIMINALS
An unusual signed relic from the 1946 Tokyo War Crimes Trials, a 16 1/2" x 17" reproduction of the front pages of the Sept. 2, 1945 issues of Stars and Stripes and the Tokyo newspaper The Mainichi, the former announcing the unconditional surrender of Japan, the latter stating: "No Person in Japan is Immune From Being Named War Criminal". The newspapers are printed on a delicate silk fabric. In the blank area on The Mainichi masthead, three of Japan's principal war criminals have signed their names in both English and Japanese characters: HIDEKI TOJO (1884-1948) Japanese political and military leader, as Premier he ordered the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, remained militaristic for the entire war, and finally executed following the Tokyo War Crimes trials; YOSHIJIRO UMEZU (1882-1949) Japanese general who headed the Kwangtung Army, final Chief of the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff and a member of the Supreme War Council. He was personally ordered by Emperor Hirohito to sign the instrument of surrender on behalf of the armed forces. Sentenced to life imprisonment; and MAMORU SHIGEMITSU (1887-1957) Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs at the end of World War II who also signed the Instrument of Surrender, was imprisoned for war crimes, yet returned after serving his time to again serve as Foreign Minister.
