Description:

JAPANESE DECORATED BALUSTER VASE
Very large Japanese vase, 30" x 15" dia., in the Kutani style, profusely decorated in muted colors including iron red and much gilding. The decoration includes two shaped principal panels of coastal views, with buildings amongst small islets. The areas surrounding these panels are decorated with a number of richly attired Samurai figures on a gold ground. A red band near the base bears a large "Paulownia Imperialis" crest of the Mikado in gilt, and the base bears the apocryphal Kutani-Yaki mark originating in the 17th century. The gilt handles are in the form of shi-shi, or stylized dogs, and the rim is deeply waved. Kutani porcelain is a style of Japanese porcelain first established by Goto Saijiro, a member of the Maeda clan, who set up a kiln in the village of Kutani (now part of the city of Kaga). The porcelain style is known for multiple colors-such as greens, blues, yellows, purples, and reds-and bold designs covering most of the surface of each piece. Since Kutani is a place, almost all pieces marked Kutani were decorated there by any of the many manufacturers or trading shops, rather than just a single factory. Fine.
