Description:

Fine photo album compiled by an aviator of the Imperial Japanese Army, 50pp. oblong folio, containing 177 b/w photos, the majority only 1 1/2" x 2" with many larger, depicting the flier and his comrades while stationed in Manchuria , then the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo, during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The majority of the photos depict the compiler's fellow soldiers in aviators, individually or in group poses, in standard IJA uniforms as well as flying gear and the cold-weather uniform most often seen in the context of the war against China. While many of these images show the subjects in formal poses, quite a few also consist of candid views of hand-to-hand combat and machine gun training, drinking parties, mission briefings, barracks scenes, and more. The majority of these images appear to have been taken at an airfield on the Manchurian steppe, identifiable by the geography and the presence of Bactrian camels and nomadic peoples with their horses and yurts. The aircraft depicted in these images include the Tachikawa Ki-9 trainer, the Kawaski Ki-10 "Perry" biplane fighter, the Mitsubishi Ki-1 bomber, and others which would be obsolete by the time of World War II. Many family photos are also present. Shows heavy insect damage to the back cover and the top edges of the last pages, not affecting any photos, with some images showing minor silvering and fading, else very good.
