Description:

JAMES NAGLE
(1822 - 1866) Union brigadier general, commanded four infantry regiments from Pennsylvania, best known for his actions at Antietam, where his brigade played a key role in securing Burnside's Bridge, a key crossing over the contested Antietam Creek. Rare war date signed endorsement on the verso of a letter from Captain Leonard H Pillsbury of the 9th N. H. Vols. Pillsbury has captured an apparently black sailor who has confessed to deserting the Navy. On the verso of the integral leaf, the letter is endorsed by Nagle who forwards the document from Pleasant Valley on Oct. 8th. Also endorsed by SAMUEL D STURGIS (1822-1889) Union brigadier general who assumed Lyon's command in Missouri. He commanded a brigade at South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg. He would serve with the 7th U.S. Cavalry under George A. Custer. Sturgis was on detached duty when parts of the 7th Cavalry were destroyed at the Little Big Horn. Sturgis notes that since the man is in the naval service there is no way to punish him so the case is referred to the War Department. Finally, there appears a signed endorsement by GUSTAVUS V FOX (1821–1883), Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War. Fox states that the man did indeed deserted, had forfeited his $90.91 pay, and: ‘the Navy Dept. does not again want him.' Short split between the leaves, slightly soiled, else very good.
