Description: JAMES MACNEIL WHISTLER
(1834 - 1903) American artist, a portrait painter with a pugnacious attitude best remembered for the portrait of his mother seated in a rocker. Scarce A.L.S. signed with his signature butterfly paraph, 2pp. oblong 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], in full: "...Edmund mon cher - We all talked about you last night at the Great George's and all were most affectionate about you. You shall not take this occasion to forget us altogether. So I, for one, knowing from tradition, that others, distinguished under the same conditions of isolation, made for themselves pet companions, in their retirement, of plants and inferior animals, notably in the case of [?]where a spider was his chosen, send you a butterfly that you should cherish as an emblem of hope and joy. Drive it not from you my dear Edmund, for it brings my best wishes and loyalty...". "Butterfly" signature a bit cut-off from inexplicable trimming of the letter. Pen docket at top of first page, light soiling, very good.
