Description:

(1882 - 1972) Governor of South Carolina who also served in Congress and as Secretary of State, and on the United States Supreme Court, making him one of the very few politicians to serve in all three branches of the American federal government. Good content T.L.S. on personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington D.C., September 13, 1968, responding to a request to sign a supposed memo from President Truman. In part: '...Neither in the enclosure nor at any time did neither President Truman claim to have sent me such a note. As the memorandum shows, he claimed to have read it to me, and then placed it in his files. The disclosure of this memorandum occurred long after the Moscow conference and I immediately issued a statement that no such conversation ever took place...I am returning the paper you sent me...' Fine condition. Sold with two other T.L.S.s dated 1947. Byrnes represented the United States at the Moscow Conference in December 1945 where he met with officials of the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union to discuss issues of peace, and the occupations of various countries. Friction arose between him and President Truman after its conclusion as the latter believed he had been left in the dark regarding some decisions, and that Byrnes was being too soft on Soviet aggression. This and other issues led to Byrnes' resignation from the cabinet in 1947. Three items.
