JAMES BUCHANAN
(1791 - 1868) Fifteenth President of the United States whose hands-off attitude toward states' rights directly contributed to the start of the Civil War. Draft A.L. as President, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Jan. 15, 1859 with numerous corrections declining an invitation to be present for a dinner honoring the poet Robert Burns adding: "Poor Burns! I have always deplored his hard fate. He has ever been a favorite poet of mine. The child of genius & of misfortune he has been more read by the people of all classes throughout the extent of this Country than any other poet living or dead his natural pathos has touched the sympathies of every man with a heart in his bosom..." Minor chipping at left margin, else fine condition.

Shipment is sent USPS priority, USPS International Express (for most overseas) or UPS Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling, shipping and insurance charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyer's should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. Customer's who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
