Description:

JACQUES-LOUS DAVID
(1748 - 1825) French painter and the founder of the French Neoclassical school, an associate of Robespierre and Napoleon's court painter, his great works include "The Death of Marat" and the enormous "Coronation of Napoleon". Very fine content third person A.L.S. "David" twice, 1p. 8vo., Paris, May 22, 1805, to Claude-Louis Bernier, one of the architects of the Louvre. In part: "...David sends a cordial good day to Mr. [Claude-Louis] Bernier. He informs him that he forgot to tell him about a painting of Mr. [Jose] Apparicio, a Spaniard. It is being exhibited in the same area as the Sabine Women. His painting shows Athalie and the young Joas [two biblical kings in Racine's tragedy Athalie]. The painting belongs to him. He asked me to store it at my house. Thus when he appears to collect it you can give it to him...You see that I kept my word. I left the Louvre even before the time agreed upon. I didn't want to take advantage of the thoughtfulness you've shown me. David. My good wishes to your friends [Pierre] Fontaine and [Charles] Percier...". Joe Apparicio (1773-1838) was a Spanish painter of the Neoclassic period who studied with David in Paris. He was later named painter of the Royal Chamber by King Ferdinand VII. The team of architects Claude-Louis Bernier (1755-1830), Pierre Fontaine (1762-1853) and Charles Percier (1764-1838) made transformations to the Louvre and the Tuileries, designed the Arc du Carousel and created the opulent Empire style. David's painting "Intervention of the Sabine Women" is one of his major works, and still stands in the Louvre today. With integral address leaf addressed in his hand, very good condition.
