(1810 - 1885) Confederate politician who first warned of the planned relief of Fort Sumter, served under Beauregard and Pemberton, and later was sent by Davis to Canada to prepare subversive acts such as the St. Albans Raid and the burning of New York. Superb content, partly-printed D.S., 4pp. folio, Washington, Nov. 10, 1857, a patent submitted by Henry Bates of New London, Conn., for an "Improvement in Projectiles". The patent, # 18,568, improves the bomb-lance then in use, a rifle-like small artillery piece usually intended for killing whales; Bates' invention placed a coil of wire to the butt end, steadying it during flight. Document has retained its seal and blue ribbon, as well as Bates' original drawing of his invention. Boldly signed, "Jacob Thompson" as Secretary of the Interior and countersigned by future Union Gen. JOSEPH HOLT as Commissioner of Patents. Heavily toned, with minor folds, very good.
