1257. JACK BIVANS - "STRAIGHT FLUSH" Excellent content T.L.S. "Jack" on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., Lake Geneva, WI, May 24, 2000, thanking the recipient for a copy of an excerpt from the book Code Name Downfall and confirming the account. He writes: "Our plane had been assigned to drop a 10,000 pound bomb...filled with TNT on a specific target in Japan which...was cloud covered. Our pilot, Major Claude "Buck" Eatherly, started looking for an alternate target...I was listening to their chatter over the intercom...I broke into their conversation and said on the intercom, `Skipper, why don't we just bomb the Emperor's Palace?'...A short time later our bombardier had the radar image of the palace in his sight and dropped the bomb. Fortunately, it missed and blew up a few more square blocks nearby. When we got back to Tinian where we were based all hell was to pay. General Tibbets personally dressed down Eatherly for doing such a dumb thing. Even in war there are a few targets that are sacrosanct...it would have been like bombing the Vatican and trying to kill the Pope..." Excellent condition. $75-100
