Description:

An incredibly rare Italian tome: 'Italiani di Mussolini in A.O.', edited by Celso Maria Garratti. Licinio Cappelli, Bologna, ca. February 1937. 570pp. folio. This book was the one of the most important propaganda books of the Italian twentieth century, bearing 720 b/w photographs taken from the L.U.C.E. Institute, (translated to the 'Educational Film Union') - created in 1924 as a propaganda tool for the fascist regime. After Mussolini's occupation of Northern Egypt, the Fascist Colonial Institute wanted to celebrate the African conquests with the publication of three editions of 'Italiani di Mussolini in A. O.' While most of the specimens intended for the public have a normal editorial binding, a scarcer edition bears a back cover adorned with long copper strips and a white satin-finish steel axe applied to the front plate with wooden molding, replicating the Italian 'fasces'. The edition offered here is rarer still, bearing a leather lining of the front and rear plates - only used for presentation copies given to high-ranking party members. Professionally refurbished to its original state. A true jewel of the fascist colonial history of the Kingdom of Italy, and certainly one of the most pristine examples extant. Sold together with the technical report of restoration, and a bivalve box coated externally in peanut hemp canvas and internally in felt fabric in order to protect it.
